tonight jupiter orbits the moon
and I rest my can of beer on the snowy ledge of a ramshackle veranda
and though there is no one here but me
I feel full in the nightlight
as mistakes fade and are swallowed by the trees
and what remains is taut on the tightrope
between sureness and oblivion
and I let it settle like a pebble arching from hand to pond and then down
ripples of memory on the water
a test of mettle
as they flatten into the body of the whole
and here we are and you're miles away
and though we've never met to say hello
it's you I want to send this to
and I wonder if it'll be an all-bets-are-off
and where we'll end up
once the pebble's nestled under jupiter and the moon
